IoT systems engineering and edge computing in distributed infrastructures

The integration of IoT devices into mission-critical infrastructures raises design requirements that go beyond basic connectivity. The systems engineer specialising in this field must conceive acquisition and processing architectures that operate with functional autonomy at the network edge, reducing dependence on backhaul links to centralised cores. This approach is particularly relevant in environments where latency, link availability, or regulatory restrictions on data transfer condition the operational viability of the system. The design of the acquisition layer demands mastery of the industrial protocols that govern interoperability between heterogeneous devices. Protocols such as MQTT, oriented towards lightweight messaging in resource-constrained networks, and OPC-UA, conceived for the semantic integration of data in industrial automation environments, represent the principal integration vectors in industrial-grade IoT architectures. The correct selection and configuration of these protocols directly affects the robustness of the system under degraded network conditions, the security of data exchange, and the capacity to scale the deployment without compromising operational coherence. Edge processing additionally introduces a distributed management dimension that requires cross-disciplinary competencies. The technical profile must be capable of coordinating local compute nodes with orchestration platforms, ensuring state synchronisation between distributed instances, and maintaining data traceability from the point of acquisition through to supervisory systems. In critical infrastructures, this capability is combined with disciplines such as industrial cybersecurity, firmware lifecycle management, and integration with supervisory control systems, which makes this profile a point of convergence between telecommunications engineering, systems computing, and embedded electronics. NASSAT is incorporating into its technical team an IoT Systems and Edge Computing Engineer profile, in a full-time remote working arrangement. The position requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering in the fields of Telecommunications, Computing, or Electronics, or an equivalent qualification, as well as a minimum of three years of accredited experience in IoT architectures, edge computing, industrial protocols, and deployment in distributed environments. Full information on requirements and the application process is available on the NASSAT Employment Portal at nassat.com/empleo.html.
